Screening of "It's Ringing" at Hind Yugm Annual Festival

Seeing your name on big screen... for the first time is like getting a Filmfare.

Our movie “It’s Ringing” was screened on 5th-march -2011 at Rajendra Bhavan,New delhi at Annual festival of Hind Yugm(Leading Hindi blog site).

After screening many people searched for makers of movie… to ask, to express their good wishes and opinions. Some people shown interest in learning the craft of movie making, some said "Can you make movie on my story?"

Leading Hindi writer Anamika ji graced the occasion and touched the spirit of the movie in her speech.

It was simply amazing... I wish and hope many more to go… many big ones to go…

A dinner with Tom Alter Sir

Date – 2nd July 09
Place – Mumbai
Venue – Mia Cucina, Bandra

Dinner with judges of the Bicycle Project Contest for the winners was organised by Bicycle Project team. Tom Alter, actor who doesn't need introduction, was one of the judges and who made sure that he spent quality time with us. I got late in the office and missed some time with everyone. But when I reached discussion related to films was on the peak and it was my luck to listen to what all Tom sir was saying from his experience. The restaurant was Mia Cucina at Bandra. Its an italian restaurant and Simona, Hemant and Sangeeta of The Bicycle Project made sure we got the scrumptious food and desserts. Sorry Simona, but my only motive for the dinner was to interact with Tom sir. But I had a great time having the food with great thoughts.
The discussion was more about the type of movies that are releasing these days. I must say that nobody other than the person can feel the pain himself of seeing something very close to his heart getting destroyed. Tom sir made sure that we all, the new generation of short filmmakers make it just for our interest and entertain people and not go for the commercialization of cinema.
He clearly stated that the feelings are not being shown on the screen. The feelings of the movies are getting lost in the procedure of making it as there are too many people handling it. The movies that have succeeded in recent years are mostly the view of one person - the director and not anyone else. If you see its pretty valid as it is director's dream that he wants to show to others and nobody else could see that until on screen. Movies like "Jab We Met", "Jodha Akbar", "Dev D" and many more were hit as the directors have shown what they wanted to and not what they felt audience will like. Then the discussion also turned to actors who are charging a lot and losing on their acting. Everyone agrees that people come to the industry to earn money. On that only question Tom sir had was - "How much is enough?" People have to ask this question sometime to themselves.
Tom sir is busy doing theatre and making films that have strong story.
Now coming to the best part of the evening
As Divya Prakash(DP) was not there for the dinner, he asked me to give the copies of his poems to everyone. I took the print-outs of his 2 poems and a cd with the videos. Surprisingly Tom sir started reading one of the poems - "Kya likhun..." (which you might have read and watched the video in our earlier posts). The poem in his strong voice simply felt out of this world. Everyone enjoyed the poem and it was amazing to see DP's poem in Tom sir's voice.
It was a motivating dinner that made me think that it gives immense satisfaction to show something to others what you feel and in a way you want.
I would like to thank Simona, Hemant, Sangeeta and Cyrus to organise such an event.
That evening was indeed one of the greatest evenings in my life.

Bicycle Project Short Film - Awards Nite

“We survived and Now we are here to stay"

Grand Wine-n-Cheese Awards Night for the Bicycle Project Contest was the first time when I was attending an event arranged by SHAMIANA - short film club. The contest held last month for which we made the short film - "Chote se Pankh". The awards night was a grand one with short films enthusiasts, short filmmakers, photographers, theatre people and many more linked to the short film club. It was an experience to be there. I really wished my friend Divya Prakash (DP) was in Mumbai that night. Anyways the night started with Cyrus Dastur, founder of SHAMIANA, introducing Vidya Malvade, "Chak De" actress who was one of the judges along with theee Great great TOM Alter Sir and the Bicycle Project team - Simona, Hemant and Sangeeta
There were a group of boys from a bike shop - The Gear. They performed great stunts on bicycles. The whole drill can't be explained in words, it was simply outstanding. Then everyone settled down to watch the screening of the 17 shortlisted short films. The films were really good and I was able to see what difference there was in shooting on a digital camera and a video camera. The moment when our short film started with our MasterStroke Productions logo, I was so happy and excited and it felt so good to watch it on a big screen with audience. Everyone who made the film was asked to speak a little about the film and their experience. So it was my turn to speak. This was the first time I met Cyrus, though we were regularly in touch through chats. I was little nervous to speak first time about my film. But then I started with what we felt and learnt about the people's needs while we started shooting and that is what we wanted to convey in the film.The biggest award was that everyone appreciated the film.
After the screenings the results of the contest were announced. There were five prizes awarded. And the moment result was announced and we got the third prize they called 'Chote se Pankh' by 'MasterStroke Productions' and I was numb for a second and then it felt so great to receive reward for what we created. This was again the moment when I felt DP should have been there. So basically I felt that we together can show what we feel in a better way.
This was just a little I could tell about the Awards Night.
DP didn't come but many days before the award he said one thing that boss if by any chance we win ,we’ll say only one thing that - "we survived and Now we are here to stay"

Chote se Pankh

This movie is made

Without the professional camera (digital camera)
Without the knowledge of proper lighting
Without the best editing software
But
With Real Characters and
With honest urge of portraying slice of life

We’ve thought that we’d bring the journey behind the scenes for every creation we did or we’d be doing …ultimately somebody famous said it “Sometimes its means, not the end justifies everything”
I was in Lucknow chilling out at approximately 35-40 degrees and was just planning many things in terms of writing and making some short movie etc but nothing concrete was coming out, in between fortunately thanks to curious soul (Samarth) send me a mail about contest by SHAMIANA and the NGO behind it.
You can get the information about bicycle project here and appreciate how noble the idea is and very motivating too.
Then after discussing bit we planned to shoot it in Lucknow, Samarth was in Agra. He took the pain of coming to Lucknow and the moment he arrived we started developing raw ideas we had in our minds, finally we came on conclusion we’d take the reaction of many kids who are working in cycle repairing shops. We wanted to see how they react to cycles as day in and day out they are repairing the cycles. But getting reaction was not an easy task. Surprisingly we asked many shopkeepers for shooting and told them that we are doing a college project. Nobody allowed us to take even a picture. Shopkeepers thought that we are from news channel and working on child labor things. Getting disappointed badly and wasting one whole day, we realized this happened because nothing was clear in our minds, what we wanted to do with the reactions.

First learning:
We are new to this shooting and stuff so we should be more planned about every inch what we want to do!!
Now after coming back home we brain stormed for at least 6-7 hours and prepared a rough draft about what we want and best thing was we were now clear with our limitations (believe me it helps

Now coming to Star cast
· Ruby – She is a school going girl, daughter of a gardener and want a cycle desperately as she came 2nd in her class
· Gaurang - He is from middle class family, he has two cycles but he loves scooty

Shooting
What we did we just started the camera and started chatting with both of them for 1 hour each and in the process we realized for the first time, they both live in different worlds, their happy moments, their dreams, their aspirations all are so different.

Final Cut
Purpose of making this movie was simple… we believe through our movie some people would definitely give some happy moments to poor children.

"Every child deserves her/his part of happiness…isn’t it ??"
